Wisdom doesn’t come alone

There seems to be a trade-off to the gaining of wisdom. Generally it’s called ‘old-age’, although old age isn’t necessarily a prerequisite to wisdom. I’m still waiting to meet a wise young person (I’ve met a few that are well on the way), but I have met a fair few older folk that haven’t yet quite grasped hold of wisdom yet. No doubt there would be some who would class me as one of those - preferably the younger person on the way to wisdom (not!) Anyway, all that was an aside.

There is much to be appreciated about getting older. However, some of the gains are much to be lamented. I’ve learnt, to my dismay, that I have an inherited predisposition toward high triglycerides in my blood. Unfortunately, hitting my fifties has triggered them off. I now have to take statins for the rest of my life. Oh joy!

The plus side is that if the doctors hadn’t found this out I could possibly be a candidate for a stroke or heart disease. The discovery of this problem started with blood tests when I had my kidney stones. So, all-in-all, some things do work together for good…

I’m back!

It’s been an interesting few months. One thing I’ve been very busy doing is redecorating of our hallway. It’s been fraught with drama, as seems to be our way of life over the past year or so, but it’s now beginning to take shape. The plastering’s finished and painted. The new skirting board and architraving have arrived and it’s beginning to be nailed in place. The terrazzo floor in the hallway will need renovating and the stairway stripped back to the original wood. Still a lot of hard graft, but it will be worth it.

Many of our close friends will know that the church plant we were leading closed over 12 months ago. I haven’t blogged about it before because it was too painful and I may have been had up for libel for some of the things I might have said. Suffice it to say, it was not good and it left very deep wounds in us as a family. Perhaps you could pray for us? We still haven’t found a spiritual home to replace what we had. There are lots of good churches in Cardiff, but so far, nothing that we feel that’s ‘right’ for us. It’s hard feeling that we don’t ‘belong’. I’ll keep you posted about what happens.

I had a brief flirtation with facebook. It’s supposed to be social networking… Perhaps I’m getting old, but I found it shallow and full of silly add on facilities e.g. superpoke. If all you want to do is be nosey about what people are up to, and you’re happy with the continual barrage of superficial questions and surveys, then this is for you. It’s also very addictive and time wasteing. I was also concerned about facebook’s intention to go public with it’s user’s details - even if you can opt out of this - it left me feeling very edgy about it all. Yet another invasive piece of technology! I’m glad to say, I’ve ditched it. Sorry if you were one of my ‘friends’, but if you want to know how I am and what I’m up to; read my blog, give me a call, or best of all - let’s grab a coffee together! You just can’t beat a good old face-to-face.
